The result values of the KPI are in the range of -1 (below the allowed variance), 0 (meeting the goal) or 1 (exceeding the allowed variance) to show a relationship between the measure and its associated goal. In order to pick useful KPIs an organization should determine the following criteria: a) have a pre-defined business process to be evaluated, b) requirements for that process, c) a quantitative or qualitative measurement of the results, and d) comparison with set goals. Once all of these items are available, KPIs can be used to identify processes that are performing well, and to improve processes that are not. An organization can’t improve a process that is not measured and KPIs are an excellent method to enhance internal efficiencies and processes throughout.
