BIAnalytix Question: User and Role Management

Where is the User/role management done, inside BIAnalytix or by some other tool? How does BIAnalytix and Active Directory (AD) interact with each others with respect to security roles definition and maintenance?

Answer:
The Cube design Tool is called BIDS (Business Intelligence Development Studio) and this is where the data slice access roles are defined. AD Groups and Users are defined by the AD Utility. Reports are designed using EXCEL 2010 and only the before mentioned tools are used for security role management.

The recommended procedure is to construct User Groups in AD that reflect the responsibilities and divisions of the user community. These groups are designed by BAs but implemented by IT. These User Groups are designed to be used for other security and access usage such as Portal or servers. New employees are assigned to all the AD User Groups that reflect their responsibilities and access to data.

Roles are then defined within the OLAP Cube that manages each of the independent data security slices. The AD User groups concerned are given access to the role. The role is then connected to the relevant data security slice within the cube by selecting the member(s) on each dimension that are allowed access. For example, Sales Office members of the Sales Office dimension can be selected to limit all data retrieval to only revenue under that particular Sales Office. With this structure, a new employee is simply added by IT to the AD User groups relevant to their job responsibilities and all access including portals, servers, and cube data slices is immediately activated. With data slice security, common reports are published for use by all staff, and each user will only see the data slice in the report that they are authorized to see.
