Many traditional reports had a set of columns that compared a current value to past values and budgets and also displayed variance and percentage values. These values could be implemented as fully calculated measures (such as Last Year Gross) for each base measure but would result in large numbers of calculated measures. By defining the general date calculation (such as Last Year) in another dimension, then it can be selected independent of the selection of the measure (or calculated measure) providing simplicity and flexibility in reporting design.
