BIAnalytix Tip Summary: Comparing Pull Analysis versus Push Reporting

As a result of the information that users obtain from their Media BI Portal, it is common that they will want to export the analysis to an Excel spreadsheet. There are two ways that the data can be captured in Excel. One type of export results in a spreadsheet with a “snapshot” of the numerical data values, while the more powerful option results in a spreadsheet that is still fully connected to the analysis data source in the data warehouse. The first “snapshot” option is often the best when the business numbers are to be used with additional offline Excel calculations because active pivot tables relocate the data. With the second option, the Excel spreadsheet can continue to be changed, drilled, and filtered to evolve into a new analysis that can then be re-published to the portal for others to use. Either export type can be useful when the analysis is to be encapsulated into a Word, PDF, or PowerPoint document.

The users that are provided full Business Intelligence interactive analysis are sometimes restricted to senior executives or power users often for sound corporate reasons. Consequently, a push delivery of important predefined analysis by e-mail or specific portal folder would be appropriate for all users who do not have full interactive BI capability. Analysis reports can be formatted and pushed as a classic text report, a HTML page, a PDF or an Excel spreadsheet.
