BIAnalytix Tip Summary: Fundamentals of Dashboard Design

The BIAnalytix Media Business Intelligence system uses the Microsoft BI Suite, which makes it efficient for users to create Dashboard reports. Design of the dashboard is very important for it to be a valued business decisions tool.
Designing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) is an important step when building a dashboard. KPIs, among other things, should be well defined and actionable. The dashboard should have a tab for each major functional area and should have appropriate KPIs for each area. It is best to include a new functional area when there are at least 3 to 5 useful KPIs. The most important KPIs should be in the upper left quadrant of the screen as that will be the first place users will look when viewing the dashboard. Good dashboard design shows KPIs as summaries first. If additional evaluation is necessary this can easily be done through drill-downs. Graphic choices must be eye catching, but not too "busy" otherwise you risk confusing the user. An effective design helps to facilitate a dashboard as a useful decision making tool.
