BIAnalytix Tip Summary: Handling special characters in OLAP

Oftentimes, end user applications support the entry and storage of special characters such as carriage return line feeds. Databases like SQL Server even have the ability to store these special characters depending on collation and data type. Analysis Services, however strips out special characters by default which can cause errors depending on the attribute and how it is used (whether it is a key or not).

When a data field that has special characters is used as a key attribute in a dimension, the end result can sometimes produce duplicate key errors during dimension processing because of the SSAS default behavior of stripping out these special characters. While this behavior can be modified at the dimension level, it cannot be disabled at the cube level. Disabling the special character suppression may solve the dimension processing problem, but having a special character settings mismatch between the dimension and cube may result in missing key errors while processing the measure groups. The best way to manage special characters in OLAP is to avoid them altogether by developing smart ETL solutions to remove or escape the characters as needed.

BIAnalytix is an enterprise class media BI system that utilizes special character stripping and escaping algorithms to keep data cleansed and usable for any application.
