BIAnalytix Tip Summary: New BI Technology in SharePoint 2010

As a BI user it is important to keep up to date with the latest innovations in BI technology. With the release of SharePoint 2010, BI has become even more tightly integrated than before with new and improved tools and features. Some of the key services include:

Excel Services – Excel rendering and interactivity in SharePoint gets better with richer pivoting, slicing and visualizations like heatmaps and sparklines. New REST support makes it easier to add server-based calculations and charts to web pages and mash-ups.

Performance Point Services – Enhanced scorecards, dashboard, key performance indicator and navigation features such as decomposition trees are available for the most sophisticated BI portals.

SQL Server Integration– The SharePoint and SQL Server teams have worked together to bridge the gap between the two platforms. Access to Analysis Services and Reporting Services is now easier than ever to achieve from SharePoint and Excel. Plugins for other vendor’s products are actively being developed as well.

Visio Services – As with Excel, users love the flexibility of creating rich diagrams in Visio. With 2010 comes the addition of Web rendering with interactivity and data binding including mashups from SharePoint with support for rendering Visio diagrams in a browser. Workflow design support has also been added to Visio.

PowerPivot – is a new concept for a powerful new in memory database technology that lets Excel and Excel Services users navigate extensive amounts of data without having to create or edit an OLAP cube. The new technology uses a special column based compression algorithm to allow a user to manipulate tens of millions of rows in Excel! A standalone add-in is available for Excel users, but a special SharePoint Add-in can be installed to provide a rich user driven BI environment.
